Two major computer security incidents that occurred in Qatar are the 2016 Qatar National Bank breach and the COVID-19 Contact Tracing data exposure.

In the former event, Qatar National Bank experienced a massive data breach in 2018 concerning personal sensitive costumer data such as emails, passwords, and other user credentials. It is unknown how hackers managed to retrieve the data exactly, but it must have been due to poor security measures put in place by the company. Over 15,000 documents were released, and the breach impact around 1,500 members of the bank. Multiple sources verified that the leaked information was correct during investigations, but they weren’t many details revealed by QNB. Source: https://www.cyberlands.io/topsecuritybreachesqatar

In the latter incident, the Qatari government’s contract tracing app, which was a solution to containing the spread of the COVID-19 virus, had been rushed in design which caused numerous security concerns to be overlooked in the development process. This caused numerous breaches on people’s sensitive information, such as their contacts and their recent locations. This breach affected almost everyone who was on the contract tracing app, which was the majority people who lived in Qatar as the government required everyone to download this app. The subsequent investigations led back to the security design flaws in the original development of the application.
