Randy Pausch: Time Management

Randy Pausch was a Computer Science professor of Carnegie Mellon University. He was the founder of Alice software project, and the co-founder of CMU’s Entertainment Technology Center. When he gave the speech, he was told that he had only several months of good health because of pancreatic cancer. His limited remaining life made his lecture about time management much more persuasive. Besides, his battle with the cancer is one of the reasons that he is known for.

Five things I liked most about this talk:

1. People should be aware of the value of time. One way to measure the value of time is to connect it with salary. I think only if people realize the value of the time, can they motivate themselves to treasure time.

2. He led audience to get involved by dividing different groups and giving them certain tips.

3. It is very important to have to do list. I learned two important tips: break things down to small pieces and do ugliest things first.

4. Do things in certain procedures to improve efficiency. By listing things in two-way table, you can divide coming events in "important and due soon", "important but not due soon", "due soon but not important", and "not important and not due soon". Putting the things "important but not due soon" before "due soon but not important" is a smarter strategy.

5. Develop your own way to manage time. He shared his life experience which was very helpful, and also encouraged to develop personal strategies.
