DIRECTIONS:  With the input (by e-mail or instant messaging) of other members from your team, work together to prepare a 10 minute argument either in favor of or opposed to the statement you have been assigned (see above). You should read what the actual presenters said during the real debates for reference, but we expect original arguments backed up by strong evidence. Important: you need to make the best case for your assigned point of view whether or not you agree with it- this is as much an exercise in role-playing as debate! After each team has presented, however, the individual members can adopt any position they want.

Grading will be based on the originality, clarity, and factuality of each presentation. You’ll probably want to assign only 1-2 people of your team to actually deliver the presentation, though that is not a hard-and-fast rule- remember that the 10 minute limit is for the team and not individual presenters! Please submit a written outline of your debate points on the day your presentation is scheduled to help Dr. Eisenberg and Dr. Reilly decide on your grade. Overall, the Doha Debate assignment will account for 10% of your overall marks in US-Arab Encounters.

Outline of a Doha Debate day:

-the FOR team presents (10 minutes)

-the AGAINST team presents (10 minutes)

-The two teams debate each other (10-15 minutes)

-The issue is opened to class discussion (until end of class) NOTE: at this point team members may abandon their assigned positions and argue any point they like

-A final vote occurs for or against the motion
