COURSE DESCRIPTION:


This course is an introduction to the world of Information Systems (IS). It introduces the core concepts of IS and its importance in the modern world around us.
The course provides a general overview on the implications of information systems on organizations, by describing what an information system is; presenting some IS applications and discussing the implications of information systems on social and human aspects. The course also focuses on initiating the students to essential information systems skills such as team work and project management.
Classes will typically consist of lectures, guest speakers, labs with hands-on applications projects, and final presentations of a team project.
A combination of weekly readings, small individual projects, quizzes and a “hands-on” team-work project will be required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES


Two main themes will be addressed in the course: the "World of IS" and the skills necessary for a successful IS implementation. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have achieved the following learning objectives.

  1. The world of IS
    • (LO1) Identify the nature and impact of IS and related technologies on people, organizations and societies
    • (LO2) Describe how an IS group creates value for an organization.
    • (LO3) Describe the role of some IS applications
    • (LO4) Identify the basic IS technologies that are typically used in business, and understand how they are used.
    • (LO5) Recognize the importance of Human Capital development in IS.
    • (LO6) Identify some social issues in IS (economic development, business values, careers and gender).
    • (LO7) Recognize the strategic role of Innovation in IS
  2. Skills necessary for a successful IS implementation
    • (LO8) Describe the IS life cycle and some software development methodologies from various stakeholder point of views perspectives.
    • (LO9) Describe the key principles of project management, experiment project Management and assess one’s success
    • (LO10) Practice and assess a basic team work experience
    • (LO11) Develop computer skills through hands-on experience using a software package and/or Internet services.
