Abstract |
Successful
student learning is a complex process depending at the very least on:
- individual work and study strategies,
- content input that is appropriate to prior knowledge
development
- the demands and structure of the learning task, and
- linguistic
knowledge and literacy skills that allow
students to mediate the content and task.
This
workshop
focuses on this fourth component and how we as teachers
can promote students’ awareness of language and their ability
to manipulate it. Using 2-3 scenarios describing student learning
situations as a basis for discussion, we will focus on the linguistic
abilities needed to complete different tasks, potential ways to
scaffold the tasks, and what would constitute useful feedback to the
student.
